Alexandra is an Elco Forty-Two, a very comfortably appointed raised deck cruiser with a trunk cabin aft and deckhouse between. It is a round-bilged boat with a single Elco six-cylinder engine which could cruise very efficiently at 9 knots, burning about 6 gallons of fuel an hour (the original engine has since been replaced by 120 hp Ford-Lehman diesel). The Forty-Two was designed by Elco staff naval architects Alfred "Bill" Fleming and Glenn Tremain. The layout of the boat contains forward and aft staterooms and a galley all the way forward. The enclosed deck house was designed with sliding plate glass windows which can be opened or closed, making the cabin open and airy or snug and dry depending on the weather.
The Elco Forty-Two, first introduced in 1924, was designed for a time when yachtsmen typically cruised with a crew of one or two to pilot the boat and prepare meals. For this reason there is a berth in the engine compartment for such a person, with a separate companionway to reach the deck. The galley could also be accessed from the deck through a hatch in the doghouse without disturbing the occupants of the forward stateroom. Alexandra has been modified somewhat from her original design and is a little more egalitarian; the forward stateroom and galley have been combined, and the engine-room berth more or less abandoned.
Throughout its life, Elco was known as a company that produced amply if not luxuriously appointed craft, and Alexandra has many of her original furnishings, including mahogany bureaus, shell-shaded lamps, and a great deal of brightwork and brass. Elco boats also shipped fully outfitted, with a dinghy, lines, deck chairs, and everything needed to cruise the coastline.
Donors Tony and Judy Hannold found Alexandra in Hilton Head SC in 1999. They bought the boat and moved it to Horn Harbor Marina near Matthews, VA, where extensive restoration work was done to her 80-year-old cedar over oak hull and mahogany deckhouse. The Hannolds cruised extensively with Alexandra and attended many boat shows, winning many awards including the Captain's Choice Award at the Hampton, VA boat show.Collection
