Description

1972.014 Boat Type: Sailing Dinghy Builder: Peterborough Canoe Company Model: Pal Length: 10' 6" Beam: 50" Date Built: 1940-1950 The Peterborough Canoe Company was founded in the early 1890s in Peterborough, Ontario. The company grew to be a major producer of many types of small craft before going out of business in the early 1960s. In the 1941 catalog, seven different sailing dinghys are advertised. This one most closely resembles the 'Pal', a 10' 6" gaff-rigged dinghy with solid spars. However, this boat has a two-piece deck with a coaming and bench seats like the larger 12' 'Scudabout.' Most likely these details were added at the request of the buyer. A dinghy like this would be perfect as a small tender or an emergency craft to keep lashed to the deck of a sailing yacht. The catalog also advertised it for recreational sailing. The construction is cedar strip over thick, half-round rock elm ribs and an oak keel. The boat is partially disassembled and partially restored. The seats, deck cap, centerboard trunk, and mast have all been removed, and the transom, transom knee, and several ribs have been replaced. It appears that the boat was given to the museum as a restoration project, for along with the removed pieces are several lengths of rib stock. Despite its partial restoration, the boat is in pretty solid shape and could be finished without too much effort, though some consideration should be given to how much life is left in the keel.
