Fay & Bowen Engine Company L 40 or L 41
Fay & Bowen were well-thought of makers of boats and engines in Geneva, NY, from the early 1900s until going out of business in the early 1930s. The company made engines for its own boats and also sold them to other companies and individuals. This engine has a plate that is confusing. At first glance it says L 40, but if you look close, the number 1 has been stamped over the right-hand edge of the 0. The museum has no literature on either an L 40, L 41, or L 401 model of engine, though it does have catalogs advertising the LN- and LC- series of in-line four-cylinders L-heads, some of which are similar to this one.
This is an in-line four, L-head, probably from the teens. It has a single magnet Simms magneto for ignition, a linkage for which runs to a control lever on the starboard after end of the engine. It also has a very large North Fast Electric Company 12 volt starter/motor generator which is connected to a gear behind the flywheel by a chain. It has priming cups, two of which are missing.
