Arnolt Motor Company Sea-Mite DDT
The Arnolt Motor Company from Warsaw Indiana. This is a small four-cylinder engine from the early '50s. It is an in-line flathead four, induction coil ignition, a thoroughly modern engine of the 1950s. It has a starter motor with a starter solenoid, wholly encased flywheel, a motor generator, and a timing belt. The motor generator can be moved to adjust the tension on the belt. The spark plugs enter the cylinder heads at a slight angle from the starboard side. Interestingly, the crankshaft protrudes slightly beyond the belt-wheel and has teeth to accept a crank handle, should the engine need to be started by hand. It has an updraft fuel intake, but the carburetor is missing. A manufacturer's plate advertises 20 horsepower at 2800 rpms. S/n 919.
The only literature on this item in the library is a sales brochure for this engine, probably donated with the engine itself. It advertises the modernity of the engine, mentioning an electric fuel pump, flame-arresting carburetor, and other details. It mentions a "two-unit" 6-volt electric system, but there is only one induction coil in the picture given, so it is unclear what is meant by "two-unit". This motor was available with an electric instrument panel, V-drive in three different ratios, and three different reduction gears. It was shipped standard with a reverse gear, but could be ordered without it as well. It was also available with an on-engine heat exchanger. The basic model originally sold for $545 in 1952 and weighed 360 lbs. EVS 2007Collection
