Description

Hall-Scott Invader 1991.004.002 This engine is, as far as I can tell, the same as the Museum's other Invader, (acc. no. 2000.080) except that it is red. However, there is a significant difference in the serial numbers that leads me to wonder if there is not a more significant difference that is not immediately apparent, such as different bore, or different rotation. The serial number of this engine is G25004; the other Invader is E25053. This engine is in decent shape except for broken intake manifolds; it looks like the carburetors were stressed in some way, and the result was that the flanges on the intake manifold to which they were attached broke away with them. What follows is the entry for acc. no. 2000.080, (except for the condition assessment) explaining the Invader model. Hall-Scott Motor Car Company, a division of American Car and Foundry Motors Company, Berkeley, California. Hall-Scott started out making rail cars, and became a manufacturer of V-8 airplane engines in the early teens through WWI. Mr E. J. Hall, along with Mr. Vincent of Packard Motor Car Company, designed the famous Liberty engine for aircraft under governement commission. The Liberty was later used in the Gar Wood 'Baby Gar' speedboats. Hall-Scott started to make marine engines after WWI, and made high-speed engines that were used by rum-runners as well as law-enforcement chase boats during prohibition. The Invader was first introduced in 1931 and made for several years in different configurations. It was also used extensively by the US Military during WWII. This is a model 168, which is shown in advertising literature from 1938. It is a big straight six, flathead, overhead cam, dual induction coil ignition with a 12 volt battery and generator, and other modern features such as an oil cooler. There is sales literature for this motor in the library, recommending it for water taxis, express cruisers, and the like. It is a very high displacement six, with 5 1/2 inch bore and full 7 inch stroke; 997.8 cubic inches capable of 250-275 horsepower. It was made with a high-capacity reverse gear and was available in either rotation. It weighs 1950 pounds and originally sold for $3200. EVS 2008
