Sterling Marine Engine, Model F, from "Dixie II"
The Sterling Engine Company manufactured the dominant engines during the early years of Gold Cup racing. PDQ II, Baby Speed Demon II, Miss Detroit, and Miss Minneapolis all won the Gold Cup powered by Sterling engines. Sterlings were built in Buffalo, NY and were a high quality marine engine. They were very reliable, however they were fabricated of cast iron and were extremely heavy. The engines eventually found industrial use, especially with oil companies, and were often used as stationary pumping engines for water works and well heads. This particular Sterling Model F is a T-Head (valves on each side of the engine) with twin ignition and rated at 130-145 HP. While it is not the original, it is a former engine in "Dixie II", having been installed for show purposes.Collection
