Erd Motor Company
Erd Motor company, founded by J.G. Erd, produced both two and four-stroke-cycle engines from at least as early as 1909. What little literature we have on the company is focused on the period around 1910. This engine in particular could be that early, but is more likely to be around 1912-15. It bears a striking resemblance to the EL series of engines made by Wisconsin. It is an in-line four, L-head, single block. It had an updraft carburetor which is missing. Ignition spark is delivered by an early Heinz magneto, with magnets made of bent iron bar rather than flat-stock. It is rated at 25 horsepower, which further suggests that it is earlier rather than later in the early teens, since that is a relatively low rating for an engine of this size and type. It is approximately 4 by 5, maybe 4 by 4. Serial number 6251. EVS 2007Collection
