Description

Red Wing Motor Company Thorobred 1972.052 Red Wing was a manufacturer of high reputation in the teens and twenties. This is a four-cylinder engine, in-line, blocks of two. It is an L-head, with a Zenith updraft carburetor. There is no ignition system whatever present, most likely it had a magneto. It is meant to have a separate starter and generator, but the starter is missing. It is rated at 18 horsepower. The serial number of this engine is 1794AA, and there was a model "AA" Thorobred motor in Red Wing Catalog #22, a photocopy of which is in the Red Wing file, and #18, an original copy of which is there. However, that motor has a closed transmission, where this engine has an open, older style transmission, similar to that on the Speedway. Otherwise, this engine very closely resembles the one in the catalog, which has a magneto ignition evident. All of the engines in both Red Wing catalogs have smooth flywheels, where this one has a toothed flywheel for an electric starter motor. It is very possible that this engine has been heavily modified from its original issue. EVS 2008
