Description

Johnson OB Boldt signage states: Johnson Outboard motor Accn. No. 1993.023 Made by Johnson Motors Co., Peterborough Ontario, Canada 2.8 HP Model 0A65 "Depression Motor" built in 1933 Full pivot reverse feature "Opposed Twin" 2 cylinder Flywheel magneto ignition This motor was built at a reduced cost by the Johnson Motor Co. during the great depression. Every effort was made by the company to keep production and engineering costs down. The gas tank was made of steel (tin) instead of aluminum, as were made during the 1920's. Older style carburetors were also used, to help clear off shelves of spare parts inventory. These "depression" motors are quite collectable and represent an important part of the historical development of outboard motors. Several years after this motor was built, the Outboard Marine Corporation saved the Johnson Motor Company from being swallowed up by the depression by purchasing it. At this point (1935), Johnson and Evinrude came under the same Corporation. Their motors did not look alike until about 15 years later, when they decided that it might be economically feasible to use many of the same parts and manufacturing facilities. JMP 2010
