Description

Outboard engine, Scott Atwater Scott-Atwater Bail-A-Matic 5 Hp 91.015 [1991.015.001] Very interesting small engine that shows the trend towards convenience innovation in the 1950s. Five horsepower, 1955. The motor is a basic vertical in-line twin, but the controls have been simplified. Twisting the tiller handle controls the throttle and the ignition at the same time. Idle adjustment and "Carb Control" (richness) are also combined, though many motors by this time had separate high and low-speed richness adjusments. The shift lever is on the starboard side of the engine. Fuel line hookup in front. The gimmick of this engine is that it can be used to pump water out of the boat it is mounted on. On the starboard side of the lower unit, just below the motor itself, is a hose barb under a rubber cover. The cover can be removed and swung aside and a rubber hose with a rudimentary cast-aluminum filter on the end attached to pump water using the cooling system of the motor. Other small conveniences include spare parts; at the base of the tiller handle is a rubber block which holds two spare brass pins and two cotter pins, and under the engine cover are kept two spare spark-plugs. In sparkling original condition, except for a few small flecks in the paint. Turns over and shows good compression. Ready for and deserving of display in the right exhibit.
