Description

Outboard engine, Clarke Troller. NOTE ATTACHED TO PRINTOUT "LESS THAN 200 IN EXISTENCE." DONATED BY GEORGE POPELLA Clarke Troller 1978.012 The Clarke Troller is an unusual engine, a single cylinder fires vertically with the power head underwater, producing one and one-quarter horsepower. The propeller is the flywheel and no gear or transmission are required. This minuscule engine is started by a rope wrapped around the propeller with the engine locked in an upright position, then is lowered into the water once running. Reputed to often stall out at this point and be generally unreliable. This engine features an adjustable-pitch porpeller; the blades feed through slanted slots in the hub and can be moved clockwise to adjust the pitch. 1938.
