Outboard engine, Caille
Caille Liberty Twin 89.030
The Caille company was formed in 1913, most likely inspired by the success of the Evinrude. This engine, like the Motogodille, is an example of an early design of outboard engines, the straight-shaft or "eggbeater", where the crankshaft is connected directly to the prop by a drive-shaft, rather than through a 90-degree gear drive. It is difficult to determine the workings of this engine. It is an opposed twin with cast-iron cylinders, and the spark appears to be adjusted from the tiller handle, though the throttle seems to be directly on the carburetor. A gear on the shaft drives the rotation of something which could relate to ignition timing, but is oddly close to the waterline. Very interesting. Needs further investigation. Starts by turning an iron wheel by hand. Missing the gas cap.Collection
