Outboard engine, Koban, 1922, two cyl, 4 HP, s/n A97324 (serial is nearly identical to one on Evinrude 1966.001. Which is correct?)
An uncommon direct opposed twin. Koban was an early but short lived producer of outboards, begun in 1914 and purchased by Evinrude in 1926. This engine is a standard mid-sized opposed twin from 1922. Its construction is slightly behind the times, being mostly iron and bronze, with some aluminum and copper parts as well. It is a magneto ignition engine, with the spark adjustment underneath the flywheel. The other adjustments were probably direct, but it is hard to say because the carburetor is missing. this engine has one unusual feature for its time; a linkage to the front of the engine adjusts a door which can open or obscure holes in the copper muffler. this engine has no spark plugs, but seems to turn over with good compression.Collection
