Description

1909-1912? Evinrude Outboard motor, "Detachable Rowboat Motor" 1 cylinder, with stand Evinrude A 2007.015 A very early outboard engine, the first marketed outboard from Ole Evinrude. Museum records indicate this engine is from 1922, but the model was made from 1909 until the company, then out of Evinrude's ownership, was forced to compete with the Elto Twin in 1921. Two horsepower. Note how the label, "detachable row-boat motor", belies that this is a new concept. One large cylinder in a cast-iron block make this engine very heavy for its size. Direct-adjusted carburetor in the front, tiller handle that turns the lower unit only. Exhaust is through a vertical perforated sheet-copper muffler cannister in back on the port side. A vent can be opened in the top of this can to relieve back-pressure at high speeds. Starts with a leather strap. Very interesting.
