Description

2007.005 Boat Type: Adirondack Guideboat Builder: W. A. Martin Model: Unknown Length: 16' Beam: 40" Depth: 13" Date Built: 1865-1886 William Allen Martin (1845-1907) is one of the best known builders of the Saranac Lake guideboats. He was known particularly for building extremely light boats, locally known as 'Martin's Eggshells.' His son, Henry Kilburn Martin, also build Guideboats and other small craft under the name The Adirondack Boat Building Company. This boat is a traditionally constructed Adirondack Guideboat, with fine pine smooth lap planking ribs and stems sawn from natural knees of spruce. One uncommon detail is the tacking pattern. Instead of driving tacks through the plank laps from the outside and clinching them on the inside only, Martin here clinched the plank laps from either side in a double row. The boat is in fine shape, but was clearly refinished at some point and the finish is failing. It has new oars, seat backs, and a middle seat. EVS 08
