Description

1995.011.001 Cedarmere Boat Type: Open Launch Builder: Unknown, possibly Leyare or Nichols out of Smith Falls, ON. Model: N/A Original Power: Unknown Current Power: Valmet Vire model C, s/n 21096 Length: 22' 5" Beam: 55" Date Built: 1909 Cedarmere is an unusual gasoline powered launch, believed to have been built by Joseph Leyare of Ogdensburg in 1909. She spent much of her life on Cedarmere Island, near Chippewa Bay. The boat is strip-planked cedar over oak, with brightwork cedar-strip decks and a bent oak coaming. It also has a radically raked V-transom, which was often done to increase the waterline length and make the hull faster. It is unclear what, if any, is the scholarship linking this boat to Joseph Leyare. Several documents in the accession file describe the boat as "believed to have been built in Ogdensburg by Leyare," but no reference is given. If she was built by Leyare in 1909, she would likely have shared floorspace in that shop with the twenty Number Boats that Leyare built in the winter of 1909-10. Another document in the folder states that Cedarmere was most likely built in Canada, but again no reason for that conclusion is given. Whoever the builder was, Cedarmere is an early example of cedar strip construction. It has two helm stations, in front on the coaming, and at starboard midships. There are two seats with seat backs aft, and one seat forward. The engine is a 2-cycle Valmet Vire-C from the 1980s. The Museum has one other, acc. no. X2007.605. Cedarmere was restored at some point, with several cedar strips replaced on the stern deck. Her paint is dull and could use recoating, but overall she is in good shape. EVS 08 Open Launch "Cedarmere" This is a 1909, 22 foot launch believed to have been built in Ogdensburg, N. Y. The boat was at home for many years on Cedarmere Island in Chippewa Bay, approximately 15 miles down river from the museum. At the time of donation the donor noted, "Our family truly enjoyed short cruises at sunset in it."
