Description

The Museum considers Idyll Oaks to be a very special boat in the permanent collection. There are several reasons for this. The Hutchinson Boat Works of Alexandria Bay, a well-regarded and nationally prominent local boat yard designed and built her. She possesses the traditional lines that made the St. Lawrence River launches so popular with their soft-riding displacement hulls. Most importantly, Idyll Oaks was the lead boat in the parade at the very first Antique Boat Show in North America in 1965. The launch style is characterized by a long foredeck with the engine normally located in front of the helm. A launch usually has one large cockpit for the helmsman and all the passengers. This seating plan provides a more congenial arrangement for all passengers. Even at speed launches usually maintain a very level attitude providing excellent visibility and a soft ride. Idyll Oaks has enjoyed excellent care all during her 75 years on the St. Lawrence River. She was the featured boat at the 2004 Antique Boat Show just as she was forty years earlier in 1965.
