Walter Lester Fay and Ernest S. Bowen formed their first joint operation, a bicycle spoke and nipple factory in Auburn, NY, in 1892. In 1900, the operation was converted to the manufacture of engines, and the Fay & Bowen Engine Company was formed. Boats were part of the business's output from the beginning, the boats being built on nearby Owasco Lake. In 1904 the business was moved to Geneva, New York, where it grew into a large-scale producer of boats and motors. The company flourished in the teens, and changed hands a couple of times in the 1920s, at one point the name was changed to FayBow Boats. It finally closed in 1937.
"Time Out" is a Junior Runabout, a model which was introduced in 1915. It was the first long-decked launch in the "Auto-Boat" configuration that the company built. Up until that time, Fay & Bowen had built only open launches. The next year, in 1916, the better-known 30' Golden Arrow model was introduced. The Junior Runabout was offered with a 4-cylinder 3½" by 5" L-head engine, one of Fay & Bowen's early 4-stroke-cycle motors.
"Time Out" was sold at the ABM Boat Show Auction in 1990. After being restored and re-powered with an appropriate engine, she was donated to the Museum by Addison F. Vars III in 1996. She remains in very good condition. EVS 08Collection
