Description

Steam Launch "Ariel" She was built in Greenwood Lake in 1884 or 1885, and she reputedly became part of the Shadow Lawn estate in Long Branch, N.J. She and her sister-ships, long and slender with high, sharp bows and graceful, rounded overhanging sterns, plied the nation's lakes and rivers in great numbers in the years near the turn of the century. Ariel is driven by a one cyl. Palmer engine built in 1926. The original naphtha power was supplied by the Marine Vapor Engine Co. A plaque lists the bell and whistle signals to be given as the craft makes various maneuvers in the water. It was restored by the donors prior to 1973. Engine info from Everett Smith 1994.
