Scope and Content

A letter to Bernard Fitzgerald from Irving Abraham Transcription: July 1st, 1937. Mr. Bernard Fitzgerald, c/o Boat Works Alexandria Bay, N. Y. Dear Mr. Fitzgerald: Last summer, I rented Mr. De Young's Cottage out at Dingman Point for a little over a month. During our stay at Dingman Point, we spent many pleasant hours in an 18 foot, extra heavy duty, three seated folding boat which I purchased from the Folbot Corporation at Long Island City. At the end of the season, I took down the boat and turned it over to Mr. De Young to keep in his barn for me. This year, I find it impossible to visit the Islands, and for that reason would like very much to dispose of the Folding Boat. I wonder whether it would be possible for you to sell it for me. It cost $80.56 completely equipped with 2 double paddles, 1 pair of Safety Bags, 6 Cushions etc. I would be willing to sell it for about half of the cost price. You son, Alvin, no doubt remembers the boat. It is made of heavy ply rubber as per enclosed sample, and has a collapsible wooden frame, and is very seaworthy. It is easy to paddle and is light in weight. It seats two very comfortable and can take three persons if necessary. Mr. De Young writes me, suggesting you may be able to dispose of it for me and has agreed to deliver the boat to your place where you would have a chance to show it to anyone that may be interested. Should this idea meet with your approval, I would appreciate it very much if you would let Mr. De Young know, so that he can deliver the boat, and also drop me a line to that effect. Thanking you for whatever you can do along this line, I am, Yours very truly, Irving Abraham

Context

The Fitzgerald & Lee collection was discovered in 2014, in the attic space of what used to be the Fitzgerald & Lee business offices. The collection was donated to the Alexandria Township Historical Society. Fitzgerald & Lee were prominent boat builders of the area from 1920-1942, building custom boats and selling Gar Wood boats. The museum holds several Fitzgerald & Lee built boats in its permanent collection.
