Scope and Content

A letter to Fitzgerald & Lee from Ben H. Berry Transcription: WA. 3189 Ben H. Berry Attorney-At-Law 901 Georgia Savings Bank Bldg. Atlanta, GA March 1, 1934 Fitzgerald and Lee, Inc. Alexandria Bay, New York Gentlemen; I am in receipt of your check for $268.75 for the note due Mrs. Brown February 1st. There is an additional $1.00 due on interest for the period of Feb. 1 to Feb. 26th. when you mailed this check. I am holding the note awaiting your additional check for $1.00 to cover this interest. There is also the matter of taxes for the year 1933 which amount to something over $40.00, however if you will also include this in your check I will be glad to accept just the $40.00. This makes a total of $41.00 for interest and taxes. I regret that this matter was not finally disposed of this month, however I am hopeful that it can be arranged before the next note falls due. Just what your plans and intentions are I do not know, but I would like to offer a suggestion which might be profitable to you. Instead of trying to get someone to buy these notes from Mrs. Brown, why not find someone one who will loan you $2000.00 on this property. I will then make a deed to them subject to your interest in this property and you will make a new series of notes to this other person, dating them the day the loan is made at the rate of six per cent. Then I will send you the notes Mrs. Brown holds for you to destroy them. By handling this matter in this way you will be saving about $150.00 yourself or in other words six per cent interest on $1750.00 from Nov. 1st., 1932. If I may be of any further help I will be glad to serve you. Am looking for a check for $41.00 by return mail. Very truly yours, Ben H. Berry Ben H. Berry bhb:b

Context

The Fitzgerald & Lee collection was discovered in 2014, in the attic space of what used to be the Fitzgerald & Lee business offices. The collection was donated to the Alexandria Township Historical Society. Fitzgerald & Lee were prominent boat builders of the area from 1920-1942, building custom boats and selling Gar Wood boats. The museum holds several Fitzgerald & Lee built boats in its permanent collection.
