Dear Fitz,
Thanks very much for your letter enclosing tickets for the Motor Boat Show. Very sorry indeed that Mrs. Fitzgerald's health was such that you could not attend, and sincerely hope that she is much better now. Somehow or other, you have grown to be an important factor at this Show, and you were very greatly missed.
I called on the gentleman whose name you gave me, at the Garwood booth (I have left your letter at home and forgotten his name). He was very courteous indeed, although, of course, we had no business to transact.
I also called at the Gray booth, and had a nice chat with the man who had been at Alexandria Bay and had seen my boat. There was also another man there, who is perhaps a technical man, and without mentioning your suggestion, I talked the matter over, pointing out to him that if I did get a new engine, I would be interested in a compromise between speed and low idling in order that I might conveniently slow it down for trolling. Without a moment's hesitation, this man recommended a 6-141, which is exactly the one you recommended in your letter.
This engine lists at $845.00, and I presume from my conversation that you would probably allow me somewhere in the neighborhood of $200.00 on a trade, so that it would represent an investment of around $600 - $650. I am loath to make an investment as great as that this year, because of other expenses that must be met, and I am inclining to the idea of continuing with the old engine another year.
I would like to have an estimate from you of the money I should spend on the old engine to do what is reasonably necessary to carry it another year. Would also like to have an estimate from you of the probable cost of overhauling the engine in the "Say-So".
With all good wishes,
Sincerely,
L R Beardslee
