Scope and Content

Letter to Fitzgerald & Lee from Lisle R. Beardslee Transcription: Lisle R. Beardslee 1775 Broadway New York, N. Y. February 5, 1940 Dear Fitz, I enclose check for $72.06, in payment of my account to date. Answering your letter of January 30th; in view of the situation as it is, I shall continue to use the present engine for at least two years. I am a little uncertain about your statement that it will cost "at least $150.00". I assume what you really mean is that it will cost approximately $150.00, as otherwise, I could interpret your letter to mean $500.00, and I don't propose to spend any large sum on it. If you can do the work for approximately $150.00, that is $145.00, or $150.00, or $155.00, or $156.00, that will be alright, and you may go ahead, but if it is going to cost any substantial amount beyond $150.00, I would like to hear from you further. As I see it, to put in five new pistons and also valve springs, rings, etc., as I understand you propose to do, will really put the engine in first class running condition, and thoroughly serviceable for at least two years. If I have correctly interpreted the facts, you may go ahead with the work. Sincerely, L R Beardslee Mr. J. B. Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald & Lee, Inc., Alexandria Bay, N.Y.

Context

The Fitzgerald & Lee collection was discovered in 2014, in the attic space of what used to be the Fitzgerald & Lee business offices. The collection was donated to the Alexandria Township Historical Society. Fitzgerald & Lee were prominent boat builders of the area from 1920-1942, building custom boats and selling Gar Wood boats. The museum holds several Fitzgerald & Lee built boats in its permanent collection.
