Letter to Fitzgerald & Lee, Inc. from LaGrou & Sandy Transcription: Auburn, N.Y. June 6, 1938 Fitzgerald & Lee Alexandria Bay, N.Y. Dear Mr. Fitzgerald: In regards to the boat that we bought from you, right from the beginning she would spit back and hesitate and we thought that was do to the fact that there wasn't any choke and not the right kind of mixture. So we had our mechanic pull the head off and we found that sometime previous to our purchase that the water pump must have failed to work letting the motor heat up. Evidently the pump started before the motor got cool which would cause the water jacket between intake valves to crack. Apparently you must have known this , due to the fact that you two new valve seats in number three cylinder. And we find a crack in number 2-number 4-number 5 and one in number 6 which we had to drill and plug same, to prevent leakage. We also had to put 2 new inserts in number 2-number 4-number 5 and one in number 6. Now, Mr. Fitzgerald, e know that you want to be fair in this matter, and sooner or later there is no doubt that we will have to replace a new head for this motor. And inas much that you told us that the motor was in perfect condition and we bought it under those conditions, we feel that we are due some consideration from you. Now, Mr. Fitzgerald, if you can supply us with a used head that is in good condition, or our mechanics bill was $38.50. Our mechanics claims that these cracks on this head had been done some time ago. We would appreciate your given this your immediate attention and hoping that you can see this matter the way we do, and please send us two life preservers at once, the same that we bought before, and also a complete top for a stern flag pole light for a 22 ft Chris Craft model 1931, and send these merchandise collect. Hoping to hear from you as soon as possible, we remain Your s very truly, LaGrou[?] & Sandy [Handwritten on verso} My Dear Mr Legrou Your letter received and note what you say about motor. I have linked up[ with our men that done the work on this motor and they say there was known checks on valve seats or any inserts after we overhalled motor. The man that owned this boat used it for one month and during that time something might have happened but not to my knolledge. We considered the boat was sold very cheap and do not believe we have to make good on amy broke down or so called trouble but never the less we are always ready and willing to make good anything that may be our fault. In the mean time I will try and locate a head for you in case the present head should go bad. We are shipping you today life preservers and light.
