Letter to J. E. Lindsey & Sons from Fitzgerald & Lee, Inc. Transcription: Copy - Fitzgerald & Lee July 21, 1938 J.E. Lindsey & Sons Thousand Island Park, N.Y. Gentlemen: Your letter of July 18th has caused a great deal of concern around here. In your letter you state that for no reason that you can find, the "Four 30" which you had installed has undue and abnormal vibration which you have proved is not in the strut or the shafting or in line up or installation in any way. Then it must be in the engine. Now we are certain it is not in the inherent balancing of the engine, we are quite positive of that. An engine that jumps around the way you tell us about seems to act, could not possibly get by our tests, nor could it get by Continentals tests Pistons, shafts and flywheels are all balanced independently and individually before assembling, so we are quite sure the trouble is not in anything of that kind. Now the only thing e can think of would be defective spark plugs, a cracked porcelain or an improperly set valve. Let us say to you that we are perfectly willing to ship a new engine to you right away, and we want you to tell your customer that if there is anything inherently wrong with that engine that he is entitled to a brand new engine and that it will be shipped just as soon as you are satisfied it is necessary to go to the expense of removing the engine. The writer suggests that you run the boat up to Fitzgerald & Lee's place. Their service men are very well acquainted with the various features of our engines. Mr. Fitzgerald has just recently installed a "Four-30". He has page 2 put in a number of "Four-30s" and claims they are all good operating engines. I know that you are first class motor men there at our place and that your sons are experts, but there may be something in the ignition or valve setting which they have not discovered and which Mr. Fitzgerald might be familiar with. Mr. Fitzgerald does not want one of these engines on the river operating other than perfect because of his interest in them. Under the circumstances I hope you too men will be able to get together and see if you can work out a diagnosis on this situation. And if either you or Mr. Fitzgerald say that a new engine is necessary, we will ship it right down, and you only have to send us a telegram or another letter. I am in hope you will go over the matter carefully and remain.y Yours very sincerely, Gray Marine Motor Company G.H. Nablo/Ms Secretary-Treasurer [Handwritten] Mr. Fitzgerald If he takes the engine up to you, and it is rough and timing & plugs do ot work, please check for scored cylinder.
