Description

1972.002 Boat Type: Rail Boat Builder: Unknown Model: Unknown Length: 15' 10" Beam: 41" Date Built: Unknown The original accession record for this boat identifies it only as a "Rail Boat" built by "Indians." A Rail Boat is a shooting boat made for hunting rail birds, similar to a duck boat. Whether it was built by Native Americans or not is unknown, but it is a uniquely built boat. It is not slab-sided as many duck boats are, but it is low in profile and relatively flat. The ribs of the boat are pieces of bent aluminum channel, nailed from the inside out to the planks. There are wood re-enforcing pieces near the sheerline, and across the keel. At the ends, a piece of thick wire is wrapped around the sheerline from one side of the deck to the other, held in place by several screw-eyes. The stems are straight and sawn, and the boat is essentially carvel-planked. This boat is very gray, with nearly every joint somewhat separated. Only one deck is present. Looks to have been originally painted black on the outside. EVS 08
