Description

1977.005 Boat Type: Pleasure Rowboat Builder: Unknown Model: Unknown Length: 16' Beam: 45" Date Built: 1880-1900 This lovely little rowboat is similar to the pleasure rowboats of the Lake George region, but also too different for definite identification. The wineglass transom is similar to the Whitehall skiffs and Lake George Rowboats, as is the radical planking shape at the stern. It's lapstrake construction, board seats, and other details make it more similar to a Whitehall, but it is too small and has a different stem profile. It has a stem sawn out of a natural knee like the Lake George Rowboats did, but it does not have the solid bottom board or any of the other Adirondack Guideboat-derived construction methods. This boat would have been used for pleasure rowing, probably with a man in shirtsleeves at the oars and a lady in the stern steering with tiller ropes. The rudder is not present, but there are gudgeons on the transom and pulleys for tiller ropes running around the inside of the boat. It is a very well-made boat, very straight grained woods, even planks, all riveted with copper rivets. Each rivet is perfectly placed and pined over. The shape that the planks take at the stern near the transom is especially impressive. The boat was nicely restored at some point, and is in nearly perfect condition. EVS 08
