Cadette
Boat Type: Runabout
Builder: Chris Craft
Model: 22' Cadet
Length: 22' Beam 5' 5"
In 1927, in order to keep up with the stock-runabout offerings of Gar Wood, Dodge, and others, the Smith brothers of Chris Craft introduced the Cadet line of runabouts at the New York Motor Boat show. "Cadette'" is an example of that first issue, a 22-foot double-cockpit runabout with a 70 horsepower Kermath engine. The primary detail that distinguishes the early Cadets is the 'skirt' in front of the windshield, as opposed to the upswept bow deck seen on later models such as "Ashlita". This boat goes 25 mph, as it did in 1927, and sold for $2250. The Cadet line allowed the Smiths to streamline their production and lower costs, making them much more competitive. The shop went from selling 134 boats in 1926 to 830 boats in 1928.
The Cadet is an all mahogany frame and batten hard-chine runabout, with only a hint of tumblehome at the stern, and a respectable amount of flare in the bow. Two cockpits are separated by the engine compartment in the middle. The engine compartment of 'Cadette' is beautiful, with period wiring and glittering brass. The 70 horsepower Kermath found inside is a 4 cylinder L-head, with a single updraft Zenith carburetor, dual induction coil ignition, and electric start. Model 70, s/n 19222.
The boat, which is number 1010, is in beautiful shape overall. EVS 2008Collection
