The Hutchinson Sedan Commuter is one of the great classic designs of the Thousand Islands. Many boaters feel that its style and stately appearance represent one of the most enduring symbols of the comfortable commuting around the River.
The Fitzgerald & Lee shop just across the Bay from Hutchinson specialized in building many of John Hacker's commuter designs. Perhaps Hutchinson was influenced by Hacker's lines or perhaps Fitzgerald & Lee wanted Hacker to develop something similar to Hutchinson's sedans. This style ranged in length from 25 feet to 40 feet. At 40 feet G.L.R. offers maximum seaworthiness, capacity and solid performance. The roomy cabin is pleasant and provided an ideal way to travel in any type of weather. The driver's station forward offers excellent visibility with a displacement hull that responded well in challenging conditions.
Local lore has it that the name G.L.R. was the owner's personal abbreviation for Grand Lady of the River. If the legend is accurate, the name is totally appropriate for this grand example of St. Lawrence River commuting at its best.
Engine info from Everett Smith 1994.
In a visit to the ABM, family members of former owner Robert Burtch confirmed that "GLR" does indeed stand for "Grand Lady of the River" a tribute to Clover Boldt, former owner of the boat for whom Burtch worked. See email correspondance in accession file. EVS 2016Collection
