Boat Type: Rowing Skiff

Model: Unknown
Length: 18' Beam 48"
Date Built: 1880-1900
This is a very interesting lapstrake double-ended skiff with no obvious provenance. It was built for fast, single-person rowing, as it has only one seat in the middle of the boat and is fairly narrow for most of its length. It is mahogany over oak, all riveted. The boat is fairly flat; the sides flare out rather than coming vertical at the sheerplank. The shape of the boat and its mahogany, all-riveted construction, make it resemble an English boat such as a Thames River Skiff, except that there are no sawn oak frames. There are a few details that make it similar in construction to a St. Lawrence Skiff, such as the sawn arrowhead stems, and sawn deck pieces with the grain running parallel to the sheer. The accession record identifies the boat as having been made by the Peterborough Canoe Company, but experts agree that this is extremely unlikely.
This is a very well-made boat, designed for recreational one-person rowing. It has adjustable foot-braces, and mahogany floorboards. The only evidence that it ever carried a passenger are small brass tabs screwed onto the coaming around the deck which may have been for a seat-back to rest against. The boat is in very good shape, with no damage to the wood or rot evident. It has no real finish on it, but the wood is still impregnated with oil which has kept it from going gray. EVS 08Collection
