Description

1981.011 Boat Type: Skiff Builder: J. H. Rushton Model: Illinois or Idaho (based on beam, dependant on hull shape) Length: 18' Beam 40 ½" Date Built: 1880-1905 Though it has no builder's plate, this is a large, double-oared 'pleasure boat' built by J. Henry Rushton of Canton, NY, sometime between 1880 and 1905. Rushton's boat shop in Canton was very well known across the US and Canada as a source for fine small craft in its day, and it is one of the most documented and well known among antique boat collectors and enthusiasts today. This boat is one of the heavier models in Rushton's fleet, built for the type of rowing and guiding done on the St. Lawrence River. It is in good shape, though the caned seats are torn and a small portion of the foredeck is missing on the starboard side.
