Description

2008.017 Boat Type: Rowboat Builder: Skaneateles Model: Square Stern Rowboat Length:15' 8" Beam: 50" Date Built: 1920s The Skaneateles Boat and Canoe Co. was established in 1893 at the head of Skaneateles Lake in central New York. They made all types of small craft in the early days, including St. Lawrence Skiffs (see 1980.004), and row/sail boats like this one. The company is most famous for the many one-design sailboats that it produced from the 1920s until the 1940s, including the SNIPE, COMET, LIGHTNING, GOSLING, and STAR boats, and also for the Hydrolite Dinghy, The company closed its doors in 1948. It is not clear from the catalogs exactly which model this is, but it seems most similar to the "Leisure Hour Row and Sail boat" in an undated catalog from the early 1920s. It is a lapstrake boat, fastened with copper clench nails and rivets, with oak rub rails and elm ribs. It has two sets of oarlocks as well as a mast hole in the forward deck, and would have had a small gaff rig which is no longer present. This boat also has a live well under the middle seat, and other compartments under the bow deck. It has lifting rings which may or may not be original. Pieces of the coaming and flooring are loose in the boat. Overall the wood is graying, but not too dry. A rope rubrail was added at some point. EVS 08
