Description

Boat Type: St. Lawrence Skiff Builder: Estes Model: Unknown Length: 18' Beam: 47" Date Built: 1890-1934 Captain Charles J. Estes (1867 -1950) was one of the most prolific builders of St. Lawrence Skiffs. Many boats left his shop between 1890 and 1934. The Estes family was a large one in the Thousand Islands and many of Charles' relatives were Captains. An E. W. Estes of Alexandria Bay is also listed as the man to contact for orders in one of the catalogs for the St. Lawrence River Skiff Canoe and Steam Launch Company. This is a very typical St. Lawrence Skiff, cedar over oak, with sawn, one-piece stems with knees. The decks are made of some type of blonde, open-grain hardwood. The ribs and planking are fastened with clinch-nails. It has red cedar floorboards. Parts of the coaming are detached and inside the boat, along with a box of St. Lawrence Skiff-style oarlocks and seat braces, and a set of very worn oars. Aside from the detached coaming, the boat looks to be in very good shape. EVS 08
