Description

1975.003 Boat Type: Skiff, Rowing, Strip-Built Builder: Unknown Model: Unknown Length: 13' 3" Beam: 33" Date Built: Unknown This is a small strip-built rowing skiff of unknown origin. It looks like a Canadian boat, and may have been made by the Peterborough Canoe Company of Peterborough, Ontario. It bears several convincing similarities to "Cedar Lapstreak Skiffs" built by that company, which were available in lapstrake, smooth-lap, or strip construction, though no model of these exact dimensions appears in Peterborough catalogs. The boat has little deadrise and is full at the waterline, making the most of its small dimensions. Peterborough rowing skiffs were often designed this way as well. The boat is also ribbed with half-round ribs and strip-planked, as were many Peterborough skiffs. One other notable detail is a set of planks added onto the hull covering what would be the garboard plank position, joined over the stems with sheet-metal. This may be original, but more likely was added on later to stop leaks around the keel, or to re-enforce a hull worn from beaching. The boat is in good shape. It appears very sound and the joints still relatively tight. The hull is gray on the inside, red on the outside, and the finish is dull and old but not peeling. EVS 08
