Description

1991.023.001 "Grandpa" Boat Type:St. Lawrence Skiff Builder: Charles J. Estes Model: Unknown Length: 20' Beam: 45" Date Built: 1890 -1934 Captain Charles J. Estes (1867 -1950) was one of the most prolific builders of St. Lawrence Skiffs. Many many boats left his shop between 1890 and 1934. The Estes family was a large one in the Thousand Islands and many of Charles' relatives were Captains. An E. W. Estes of Alexandria bay is also listed as the man to contact for orders in one of the catalogs for the St. Lawrence River Skiff Canoe and Steam Launch Company. This skiff appears to have been built for guiding. It has full floorboards and ceiling inside, many small compartments and drawers for equipment, and an extra-wide middle seat. It is a double-oared skiff, with regular oarlocks aft and typical SL Skiff pin oarlocks in front. It is in good shape, complete though in disarray and with some small bits missing on the inside. The hull, bafflingly, has three different finishes, but there is little gray wood. According to Everett Smith, the boat was purchased for use in the Adirondacks, but proved too heavy and spent most of its life in the boathouse.
