Description

1988.033 Boat Type: St. Lawrence Skiff Builder: Unknown Model: Unknown Length: 18' Beam: 46 ½" Depth: 14 ½" Date Built: Unknown As was the practice of some builders, this skiff was not signed in an obvious way, and it is currently not attributed to any particular builder. Its construction is typical for a St. Lawrence Skiff, cedar over oak, with inner and outer keels and stems. The decks are made of very finely flame-grained oak. There are a few pieces of mixed loose hardware inside, including oarlock sockets. The accession record says that the boat came to us in a deteriorated condition. It looks now as if some attempt was made to partially restore the boat, or prepare it for some sort of interpretive exhibit. The boat is ½ gray, ½ sanded, and one deck is varnished. A 3' section of one plank has been removed, and a couple of ribs have been sistered or replaced. There are many visible details which should be helpful in determining the builder. EVS 08
