Description

1984.033 Boat Type: St. Lawrence River Skiff Builder: Estes Length: 16' 11 1/2" Beam: 3' 1/8" St. Lawrence skiff, built by Estes, deck inlaid, seats inlaid, center seat inlaid with initials "MLF", fish box under center seat, hull - red cedar, condition Good./Exc. This smaller, "ladies skiff" was built by Charles Estes, one of the most prolific of the Thousand Islands Skiff builders. As was common practice in naming boats, M.L.F. are likely the initials of the original owner, possibly Mary Lyon Fisher. M.L.F., with her red cedar planking, inlaid initials, and extremely fine craftsmanship is an example of how skiffs became more elaborate as they began to be used more frequently as pleasure craft, although she was still used for fishing, as the fish box under the seat attests.
