Description

St. Lawrence Sailing Skiff St. Lawrence Sailing Skiff Date Built: ca 1902 Builder: George W. Miller Length: 19' Beam: 3'8" Accession Number: 1999.015 Donor: Harold Herrick III About: George W. Miller built this sailing skiff here in Clayton in 1902 for the donor's great-grandmother. It was kept in the Herrick Family's boathouse at "Kumtuit," on the head of nearby Grindstone Island. The Herrick Family participated in weekend races here on the River including the "Cork Screw Race." This skiff won the Ellis Cup Race in 1966 and the New York Times documented it in the article "Old Boats Never Die in Clayton, NY." Restoration was done on her in the 1970s by Melvin Calhoun and again 25 years later by Milton Carnegie, of Grindstone Island. Note the drop down folding centerboard that revolutionized St. Lawrence skiff sailing.
