The Lyman Boat Works grew out of a family livery business and boat yard on Lake Erie in the early part of the 20th Century, and began selling boats in the early teens. Lyman became one of the largest producers of affordable utility boats and outboards up into the 1970s. They are probably best known today for their wide, dry inboard utilities, usually with canopy top; one of the most seaworthy and comfortable classic craft to spend a day in. The most recognizable feature of a Lyman is its white-painted, heavy lapstrake construction, which the company called "Clinker-Built;" a term borrowed from English and European boat builders.
The 18' Inboard Runabout was introduced in 1955. It is planked in fir plywood, and came out of the Lyman plant when it was operating at a very high capacity; this boat was probably completed inside of a week. The engine is a Gray Marine 90 hp straight six. It was delivered to Mercier Marine in Clayton in 1957. The Schmidt family who donated the boat to the museum had it restored prior to donation, including rebuilding of the engine, at a cost of $15,482. They also christened the boat "Egret", but did not paint the name on the transom. This boat remains in good shape, the restoration work seems well done and accurate. EVS08Collection
