Description

2005.021 Pelican Boat Type: Utility, Inboard Builder: Chris Craft Model: 22' Sportsman Original Power: Chrysler SM-7 s/n 33134 Current Power: Original Length: 22' Beam: 7' 3" Draft: 20" Date Built: 1947 The Chris Craft Sportsman was the utility line of Chris Craft's postwar fleet. In the early (1946-47) catalogs, the Sportsman is often listed as the "De Luxe Utility Boat." The Sportsman was available in lengths from 16-25 feet. Of this particular model, the 22', 2,082 hulls were built between 1946 and 1954, this one is number 722. Pelican has a folding canopy top, which was available at extra cost from Chris Craft. Also available was a streamlined ventilating cabin. The Sportsman came with several different engines over the years from both Chris Craft and Chrysler. The boat was rated to 33 mph with the 115 Hp Chrysler SM-7, a straight six with single updraft carburetor. This outfit sold in 1947 for $2885. "Pelican," then unnamed, was delivered to Mercier Marine in Clayton on April 3rd, 1947. The boat changed hands several times, servicing the Cook's camp on Murray Island, and later moving to Lake Hopatcong. In the 1990s the boat was serviced by Wayne Mocksfield, and then later, after the Babcocks bought it, the bottom was replaced by Rand Speas of Welaka Landing. A complete restoration was done over the winter of 1996-7. Pelican is currently in very nice shape, the product of extensive but appropriate restoration work. She has her original power plant, and has returned to the St. Lawrence River where she was first splashed 61 years ago. EVS 08 (Comments by Chris Johnson, ACBS Judge) * Bow hatch handle on backwards * Little step pads on stern are wrong * Upholstery should be solid blue * Flooring should be black ribbed * Some wiring is modern * Modern hose clamps * Modern plug wires * Manifold letters should be red
