Description

The mesenqo or chira-wata is a single-stringed bowed lute commonly found in the musical traditions of Ethiopia and Eritrea. The body of this masenqo is wood carved in the shape of a crouching man. The string on the bow and the instrument is horsehair.

Use

This instrument is used by Ethiopian and Eritrean musicians called azmaris in both secular and religious music.
