"Legs
We lived on the fifth floor of a six story tenement-five floors from the hard kiss of cement, a bounce off clothes lines, hand flailing-a long scream, then silence. I pictured this each time my mother cleaned windows sitting on the small ledge, her back to the unobstructed air. A crumpled page of newspaper in one hand, Windex in the other- the panes in rotted Victorian frames with much of the putty cracked or missing. "Hold my legs," she'd say, using my tiny form for ballast- the clinging tourniquet I became, keeping the blood from reaching her toes. "Not so tight," she'd urge- a thin sheet of foaming glass between us.Then mouthing the words slowly, as though I might read her lips and relent: "Not... so.. tight. Not... so... tight..." But I never listened.
