"Ada's decision to have the barn painted has not created an affinity with the sky. The family is troubled. When they visit they now see this lack of an affinity, but they are not sure of what they are seeing so it's very uncomfortable.
Ada's brother-in-law Curtis is picking blueberries from the blueberry bushes. he is also picking them from the porches of his youth: and Ada is calling to her husband Irving, and Irving is calling to no one, - the clothes which are moonlit
are like the jokes about his uncle who has become so plump that when he wears a dark blue shirt he resembles a blueberry, and when the uncle is told this he is offended: his clothes are moonlit but he is offended.
There is not much affinity between blueberries and money. Oh, Ada makes some money from the blueberries, people come to pick, but she misplaces the blueberry money as often as she banks it. And the banks are miles away anyway, as far as the mountain is from the sea, as far as the bra is from the socks
on the clothesline, as far as the uncle's dark blue shirt is from the cat at the edge of the field, as far as
the plump fossils of the moon are from the bed we sleep in.
But we dream. We dream.
