Never A Sad Ending
Once our memory misremembers, what are we to do, Especially if what's lived has been this lasting error? It's not so easy to embrace yourself, maybe not even needed. The survivor tells her story, and some are moved to tears, and wax in the candle gets hollowed out. Don't look to me: my answer's just as begging as the next. Down country roads the perfect number of old churches can be found, as though deep woods have shoved them forward and they are shy but willing to stand all day in drifts of rain. And of course- I need not tell you- part of each word is wordless, so that when you speak there's a part of what you say that even you can't claim to own. Once, in the woods, my grandfather brought me to a tree he named extinct at least a century. A long while we looked at it. We were like men who knew the world would end. But not today.
