The ORWO trademark ("ORiginal WOlfen") was introduced in 1964 to distinguish GDR output from West German Agfa, and the Fotochemisches Kombinat was founded in Wolfen in 1970, with VEB Chemiefaserwerk "Friedrich Engels" Premnitz among its operating units; VEB Magnetbandfabrik Dessau and VEB Galfütex Schmölln (renamed VEB ORWO-Plast Schmölln in 1982) were joined to the combine later, with Dessau becoming the main magnetic-tape producer. The Compact Cassette format itself was first introduced by Philips in 1963.
