Name/Title
Jar cap, molded plastic with two gripping tabsEntry/Object ID
2025.1.433Description
A circular screw or press cap of molded plastic, about 5 cm in diameter, with two flat tabs projecting from opposite sides of the rim, each roughly triangular, wide at the join and narrowing to a blunt point. The tabs are finger grips for twisting the cap on and off, and they sit level with the rim rather than rising above it.
Outer face (convex). Gently domed, with three concentric molded ridges and a raised central disc. The ridges are mold-form decoration, not turning marks.
Inner face (concave). A shallow recess within a low rim wall, with three or four concentric molded rings and a small raised nub at the exact center, with an irregular flake or scar beside it. ⚠️ The central nub is almost certainly the injection gate, where the molten plastic entered the mold, and the flake beside it is where the sprue was broken or trimmed off.Use
Belonged to Gertrudis Caraballo Gálvez. Not sure if acquired after 1990.Context
The swirled, unevenly blended color is what happens when mixed or remelted plastic stock is molded, rather than a single uniform pigment batch. That same feature was recorded on the plastic die identified as merolico or home production, and on the black and red damas pieces. It is consistent with low-grade or recycled stock, which in this collection has meant Cuban informal or small-scale production.Collection
