Jar lid, lug-type closure, gold-lacquered metalEntry/Object ID
2025.1.439Description
A shallow circular cap. The top is flat and set slightly down inside a rounded raised rim. The side wall is short and straight. At the bottom edge it turns inward into a flange with evenly spaced inward-pressed lugs — the wavy profile visible along the lower edge. Those lugs grip the threads on a jar’s neck when the cap is twisted a partial turn.
The outer surface is a gold-colored lacquer. It is worn through to silver-colored metal on the rim and at points around the side wall. The top is covered in fine scratches running in many directions, with a few heavier abrasions near the center and a small dark spot near the rim at upper right.Use
Kept in the Arús Caraballo householdContext
Gold-lacquered lug caps were made in very large numbers worldwide for jars of preserves, jams, baby food, sauces and the like, and the form changed little for decades.Collection
