The Brigada Antonio Maceo was founded December 21, 1977. It was constituted by young people who, as children, had been taken into emigration by their parents — in the framework of Operation Peter Pan (1960–1962) — and who returned to Cuba by invitation and of their own will; it was founded on December 21, 1977, when 55 young Cubans returned after having left the island as minors in the 1960s and 1970s. The brigade is named for the 19th-century independence general Antonio Maceo, whose profile forms its emblem.
