Lottery saving-bond fraction (centésima), Plan de Bonos del Instituto Nacional de Ahorro y Viviendas, Sorteo No. 86, Havana, 19 November 1960, vignette of the Reparto Textil, GuanabacoaEntry/Object ID
2025.11.75Description
A horizontal paper rectangle printed in dark olive-green over a pale green security underprint. The underprint is a repeating pattern with the institute's name in large pale lettering. The back is printed in black on the same green ground.
Front. At left is a picture of a new housing development: a row of low single-storey houses with flat roofs, one wall boarded or paneled, set back behind lawns and agave-like plants. A straight road and a raised curb run toward the horizon under cumulus clouds. A panel beneath reads REPARTO TEXTIL (EN GUANABACOA) / PROV. DE LA HABANA. The picture is signed at lower right J. BIBILONI. I enlarged the signature to confirm it. Top center: VALOR NOMINAL 22¢ and PRECIO AL PUBLICO 25¢, then REPUBLICA DE CUBA and INSTITUTO NACIONAL DE AHORRO Y VIVIENDAS. The bond number 09920 sits over a ground of interlaced rings, with CERO NUEVE NUEVE DOS CERO spelled out beneath. Lower center: OCHENTA Y TRES and SORTEO Nº 86 / NOVIEMBRE 19, 1960. The panels at right read 83ᴬ, then an emblem of two facing pointed arcs over a cross-hatched ground, then OCHENTA Y TRES, then a cross-hatched panel.
⚠️ A blue ink-stamp V is written over OCHENTA Y TRES in the right-hand panel.
Back. The layout is identical to the Sorteo 77 ticket. On the left is TABLA DE REINTEGROS PARA BONOS NO PREMIADOS with the centésima statement below. On the right are the size of the draw, the prize list, the house-prize clause, and DIRECTOR GENERAL above the printed signature. A vertical panel reads SORTEO No. 86 / 19 DE NOVIEMBRE DE 1960. The number 09920 is punched through as a perforated cancellation.Context
This ticket and Sorteo 77 are nine weeks apart, and comparing them sorts the variations into two kinds.
Things that stayed the same between the two 1960 draws:
The two-color printing with the security underprint
The size of the draw: 30,000 bonds at $22
The whole prize list, including the house prize
The refund table for losing bonds
The totals: $660,000 raised, 7% expenses of $46,200, and $413,800 "para reintegros y viviendas" (for refunds and housing)
The Director General's signature
The illustrator, Bibiloni
Things that changed from one draw to the next:
The ink color: blue on Sorteo 77, olive-green on Sorteo 86
The emblem in the right-hand panel: a circle around an upright form on Sorteo 77; two facing arcs here; a circle interlaced with a pointed oval on the 1961 ticket
The housing development pictured: Wajay, then Reparto Textil, then Havana del Este in 1961
Changing the ink color and emblem with each draw looks like a deliberate security measure. It would make a ticket from one draw hard to pass off as a ticket from another, much as banknote series change color. And the picture on each draw seems to have shown a different INAV development, which would make the tickets advertise, draw by draw, the houses they were paying for.
⚠️ The Reparto Textil in Guanabacoa is named only on this ticket. There is no source on an INAV development of that name. There is a Pueblo Textil at Bauta (Ariguanabo), but that is a different place in a different municipality, and the two must not be confused.Acquisition

Back, left column: the refund table, with the same rates as Sorteo 77: 10% ($2.20) rising to 125.4% ($27.59) in the ninth year. ⚠️ On this copy the fifth-year figure reads like 21.20, and the sixth-year like 21.93. Enlarged, the first "4" in each is a damaged piece of type printing only its upright stroke. The correct figures are 24.20 and 24.93 (110% and 113.3% of $22), and those are the figures printed on Sorteo 77. The fault is in the printing, not the content, but it is worth noting as evidence of how the type was set.
CENTESIMA parte del Bono de dicho número para el Sorteo No. 86, que se ha de celebrar en La Habana el día diecinueve de Noviembre de mil novecientos sesenta. (One hundredth part of the Bond of this number for Draw No. 86, to be held in Havana on the nineteenth of November, nineteen hundred and sixty.) Payment terms follow.
Back, right column: 30,000 bonds at $22 = $660,000; 1 prize of $100,000; 1 prize of 10 houses at $5,000 = $50,000; 1,000 prizes of $50 = $50,000; prizes total $200,000; remainder $460,000; 7% for expenses, $46,200; for refunds and housing, $413,800. I checked the arithmetic and it is correct. Then the house-prize clause, then DIRECTOR GENERAL above the signature, and SORTEO No. 86 / 19 DE NOVIEMBRE DE 1960.Security Features
Notes
⚠️ What 83ᴬ means (tentative). The raised-letter numbers on the four tickets are 4ᴬ, 83ᴬ, 25ᴬ and 32ᴬ, and each is spelled out in the adjacent panel. All fall between 1 and 100. They are most likely the fraction number: which of the hundred centésimas of the bond this one is. Nothing printed on the tickets says so.Composition

Open questions, most important first:
-Confirm that the raised-letter numbers are the fraction numbers.
-What the hand marks mean. Three of the four tickets carry one in the right-hand panels: a red oval (Sorteo 77), a blue V (Sorteo 86) and a dark stroke (Sorteo 137). Sellers' tallies, checkers' marks, or winner notes are all possible.Created By
