Mr. Qiu, a native of Shanghai, China, is an engaging and inquisitive person with a very strong spirit. He grew up as the second eldest of six children in a farming community. Life was "not easy" and, from an early age Gary had to help his parents take care of his siblings and work on the farm.
Gary finished college and got a job in engineering. As he ages, he feels grateful to have had the opportunity to go to school and get an education. After getting married, he and his wife had two sons. The eldest came to the U.S. first, found work and got established, and eventually sponsored his parents to move here, needing help
raising the grandchildren.
At On Lok, Peralta's Activity Leader encouraged Gary to try something different: painting! Gary chuckles that although he seldom painted before, he now enjoys it and the ongoing classes with his AWE art teacher, Dmitry.
"Making art helps my mood," he says, "and helps me feel more pleasant and relaxed."
